There’s such a whiplash effect from “you need to see this movie to be a good person” to “how DARE you like that movie? You’re a bad person!”
And it think it effects our ability to watch things without having the discourse influence our feelings about it on a raw level. I haven’t seen this yet and probably won’t because I’m not a huge fan of musicals so musical with bad music? Not for me.
But I felt this way about Substance. The discourse was that it’s such a hugely IMPORTANT and NECESSARY film!
So I was disappointed. But it was well made and wildly inventive! If I had watched it without knowing the stuff around it, I think I would have liked it better?
you can always go into it for the sake of a little laugh because some of the numbers are so over the top it's funny but I don't think it's a necessary film to see (unless you're like me and want to see every since best picture nominee for bragging rights - it still doesn't always help my ballot)
I haven't seen substance yet (I think it'll be my next one) but I agree that the discourse (or really any hype) directly affects our viewing experience - but shouldn't it? there's a reason people want to talk and share their thoughts on media and sometimes it's interesting going into something wondering if your preconceptions will be confirmed or if you'll be willing to change your mind based on your own experience. I don't think my thoughts on Emilia Perez would be horribly different had I gone in completely blind - the music was still weird, Selena Gomez was still jarring - but especially with a film like this it's good to zoom out and see what others are saying that we may not have previously considered.
anyways I'm glad you enjoyed - there will be more where this came from soon! (credits are rolling on Anora as I type this) looking forward to checking out your reviews as well!

I do think the discourse is important! I think for me I just mean that love seeing things BEFORE I’ve seen the discourse about it.
I, unfortunately, am so off trend that I never make it to anything early (except for things like Y2K which had like, no buzz)
Ha fair!
